This is the starting position for a game of chess. The pieces are arranged on an 8x8 grid called a chessboard. Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The objective of the game is to checkmate your opponent's king, which means putting it under threat of capture with no way to escape. The piece at A1 is a white rook. The piece at B1 is a white knight. The piece at C1 is a white bishop. The piece at D1 is a white queen. The piece at E1 is a white king. The piece at F1 is a white bishop. The piece at G1 is a white knight. The piece at H1 is a white rook. The pieces on the second row are all white pawns. The pieces on the seventh row are all black pawns. The piece at A8 is a black rook. The piece at B8 is a black knight. The piece at C8 is a black bishop. The piece at D8 is a black queen. The piece at E8 is a black king. The piece at F8 is a black bishop. The piece at G8 is a black knight. The piece at H8 is a black rook.
